Adoption Counseling - Are You Ready to Adopt?
It is our goal for each match between a pet and a “parent” to be perfect. With that in mind, it is important to set adopters up for success. If you are thinking about adding a new pet to your family, plan ahead! Preparation, rather than impulse, is the key to a smooth transition. The staff at PAWS is available to assist you before, during and after the adoption process to ensure that it will be a match made in heaven!
We often make decisions about pets with our hearts, and as animal lovers, that is understandable. However, it is important to let your head play an important role when making such a big commitment. Make sure you have thought about the time required to properly bond with your new pet. Are you prepared to take that time to train your animal and do you have enough hours in the day to spend some with them? The novelty of owning a new pet often outweighs the practicality of adopting a new family member. Will you be committed to the animal for the rest of its life? Are you able to pay for the veterinary care your pet will need, including routine exams and keeping vaccines up-to-date? Are you anticipating any big life changes such as a move to a different home, changing jobs, a new roommate, or having a baby? All of those could have an impact on your decision to adopt a pet.
We certainly don’t want to discourage anyone from being a pet owner. Animals, after all, are one of the greatest joys in life and adopting from a shelter is a very rewarding experience. The animal you bring into your life can offer you unconditional love and years of joy! It is important to plan ahead and to make sure you are committed to your furry friend.
Here are a few things to consider:
- Be realistic about what you are looking for in a pet. If you don’t have a fenced yard or the time provide a pet with daily exercise, a high energy, big dog might not be the best fit for your situation. A "couch potato" or a smaller senior dog might be a better fit
- Make your home “pet-friendly” in advance of bringing an animal home. Buy pet supplies and make sure the area around your home is secure. It is devastating to have a lost pet, especially when planning in advance could have prevented it
- Take an honest look at your budget. Can you afford the expenses associated with pet ownership?
- Don’t make a snap decision. Be prepared to wait for the right animal to join your family
- Are you committed to being patient with a shelter pet that might have had a bad experience with previous owners? It can be time-consuming but is worth it. You will have a devoted family member that will be eternally grateful for your kindness and dedication.
